Join us at the Detroit Public Library as we observe the 185th Anniversary of Nat Turner's Rebellion in partnership with the American Library Association, The United Nations and BazanED's The Birth of a Nation National Lecture Series, inspired by Nate Parker's upcoming new film, The Birth of a Nation. The Detroit Public Library takes an in depth look at Nat Turner through the documentary "A Troublesome Property," followed by discussion with noted historian Dr. Melvin T. Peters, an Associate Professor in the Department of African American Studies at Eastern Michigan University. The documentary, a unique collaboration between MacArthur Genius Award feature director Charles Burnett, the acclaimed historian of enslavement Kenneth S. Greenberg and Academy Award-nominated documentary producer Frank Christopher, NAT TURNER adopts an innovative structure by interspersing documentary footage and interviews with dramatizations of different versions of the story, using a new actor to represent Turner in each. The filmmakers have interviewed a broad range of contemporary African American and white descendants of those involved in the rebellion, historians, writers and artists, and weave these interviews with dramatic recreations based on literature, folklore, novels and plays—reflecting the multifaceted legacy of Nat Turner today.
