BazanED is proud to offer a free four-day instructor-led live online series of classes commemorating the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II and the 78th anniversary of the historic Battle of Midway, a pivotal engagement that turned the tide of the war in the Pacific.

This series is for History and Science teachers, students, and parents. You are invited to join as many or as few classes as suit your needs.

Jennifer Elliott

Jennifer Elliott is currently a senior museum educator at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City, where she primarily works with K-12 students and teachers. She earned degrees in Theater and Astronomy from the University of Florida, and a Masters in Museum Professions from Seton Hall University. In her spare time, she enjoys exploring new places, winning at Scrabble, and spending time with family and friends.

Jonathan Milard

Jonathan Milard is a senior museum educator at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum and has a background in Literacy and Social Studies Education. Jonathan has worked in the field of education for eight years and enjoys sharing his passion for history and engaging instruction.

DELIVERY METHOD: Google Meet

Program to take place over 4 days with one virtual learning program per day

  • June 1 – Day 1 – Introduction to the Battle of Midway via Primary and Secondary Sources
    • Standards: National Council for Social Studies Standards 2b, 2c, 2d, 3c
    • Participants will discuss the difference of primary and secondary sources and what we can learn about an event from each. 
    • Participants will hear an oral history from the Battle of Midway
    • Participants will examine an infographic (secondary source) of the Battle of Midway.
  • June 2 – Day 2 – Aircraft Carriers and How They Work
    • Next Generation Science Standards HS-PS2-2, HS-PS2-1, MS-PS2-1, MS-PS3-1, MS-PS3-5
    • Participants will learn a quick overview of the science behind how planes fly (four forces overview)
    • Participants will compare/contrast an aircraft carrier and airport
    • Participants will brainstorm ideas for how an aircraft can safely land on a shortened runway (aircraft carrier flight deck) and sketch/build designs.
  • June 3 – Day 3 – Attitudes at Home: Isolationism vs. Interventionism
    • Standards: National Council for Social Studies Standards 6h, 7i, 9b, 9e
    • Participants will discuss differing attitudes in America prior to the Attack on Pearl Harbor.
    • Participants will examine political cartoons from World War II and discuss which attitude the cartoons convey.
    • Participants will compare/contrast isolationism and interventionism with attitudes surrounding current events and create political cartoons for today.
  • June 4 – Day 4 – The Science of Battle: Projectiles and Momentum
    • Next Generation Science Standards HS-PS2-2, HS-PS2-1, MS-PS2-1, MS-PS3-1, MS-PS3-5
    • Participants will learn about projectile motion as it pertains to the Battle of Midway.
    • Participants will learn about different types of collisions and which is more crucial to the Battle of Midway.
    • Participants will design their own projectile motion device (catapult) from everyday materials.

This class will be conducted online via Google Meet with a live instructor leading the class. Participants will be provided a video link to join the class prior to the date.
